Japan Study Abroad
During the summer of 2019, I got a wonderful and amazing opportunity to study abroad in Japan. Years before my study abroad, I knew that I had to visit this country and experience the culture. This study abroad focused on the cultural aspects of Japan. I spent one month in Kyoto and one month in Kyoto. In those two cities, I was able to visit nearby cities or prefectures. For example, I went to Osaka, Mt Takao, Hakone, and Akihabara
This trip impacted me so much! Japan is a country that is rich in vibrant culture and arts in many forms. Most importantly, I honed in on many skills. For example, I learned how to plant and cultivate rice!
I must admit, this trip was a cultural shock. I got lost a couple of times, but because of those experiences, I learned how to use several modes of transportation: train, bus, and subway.
What I love the most about Japan are Japanese hospitality and generosity. The people prioritize the collective over the individual and to me that is beautiful. Coming back to the USA, I adapted to that way of living. Japan taught me how to be more of a team player.
The various festivals I witnessed in Japan were extremely precious and beautiful. The people always seemed happy and loved to give gratitude. In Kyoto, I lived next to a Buddhist temple, and that taught me the importance of stillness and mindfulness. All of these lessons helped me be a better student. Now, when I am feeling anxious, I mediate and do deep breathing exercises.
